Assam Agricultural University (Jorhat).
The Assam Agricultural University, was established on April 1, 1969 under the Assam Agricultural University Act, 1968. The broad mandate of the University is to impart education to the people in agriculture and allied branches of learning, furthering the advancement of learning and prosecution of research in agriculture and allied sciences, and undertaking the extension of such sciences especially to the rural people of the state.

The University has four faculties for teaching activities in the areas of agriculture, veterinary, home science and fisheries sciences. All faculties except Fisheries are headed by the respective Deans. The Deans are also the chairpersons of the concerned Board of Studies of their Faculties, which monitor the academic activities in respective faculties, and report to the Academic Council. The University has at present 6 resident colleges, out of which two are for Agriculture, one each at Jorhat and Biswanath Chariali; two for Veterinary Science and one each at Khanapara (Guwahati), and North Lakhimpur; one for Fisheries at Roha; and one for Home Science at Jorhat.

Assam University (Silchar).
Assam University came into existence through Assam (Central) University Act, 1989 (Act. No. XIII) and was established in 1994 and ever since then the University is steadily becoming an excellent centre of learning.

The University has eight schools on major disciplines. They are Social Sciences, Humanities, Languages, Life Sciences, Physical Sciences, Environmental Sciences, Information Sciences, and Management Studies. There are 24 Departments under these eight Schools. The University has at present as many as 51 Undergraduate Colleges.

The objectives of the University are to "disseminate and advance knowledge by providing instructional and research facilities in such branches of learning as it may deem fit and by examples of its corporate life to make provisions for integrated courses in humanities, natural and physical sciences and social sciences in the educational programmes of the University; to take appropriate measure for promoting inter-disciplinary studies and research in the University; to educate and train manpower for development of the state of Assam; and to pay special attention to the improvement of the social and economic conditions and welfare of the people of that state, their intellectual, academic and cultural development."

Dibrugarh University (Dibrugarh)
Dibrugarh University, the eastermost University of India was set up in 1965 under the provisions of the Dibrugarh University Act, 1965 enacted by the Assam Legislative assembly. It is a teaching-cum affliating university with limited residential facilities. The University is situated at Rajabheta at a distance of about five km to the south of the premier town of Dibrugarh in the eastern part of Assam.

The University through the various teaching departments in its campus and the affiliated Colleges scattered over the seven district is imparting higher education in the various branches of learning in Arts, Commerce, Engineering, Medical, Pharmaceutical Sciences, Law, Science and Technology, Computer Sciences and Teacher's Training.

Besides teaching these above mentioned courses the university offers M.Phill Courses in nine subjects and encourages research in all the Departments for the Degree of Ph.D.

Tezpur University (Tezpur)
Tezpur University was established by an Act of Parliament (Act. No. 45, 1993) in the year 1994. The University campus is at Napaam about 15kms. East of Tezpur, the head quarter of Sonitpur District of Assam. Napaam is a rural area surrounded by peace loving people of diverse caste, relegion and language; yet it presents the unique feature of unity in diversity.

The Univesity has thirteen faculities on major disciplines. They are Department of Computer Science and Information Technology, Department of Electronics, Department of Physics, Department of Chemical Sciences, Department of Mathematical Sciences, Department of Molecular Biology and Biotechnology, Centre for Food Processing Technology, Department of English and Foreign Languages, Department of Cultural Studies, Department of Mass Communication and Journalism, Department of Energy, Department of Environmental Science and Department of Business Administration.

Indian Institute of Technology, Guwahati (Guwahati)
Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati is the premier institute of engineering, science and technology in the north-eastern region of the country with a growing list of accolades earned nationally and internationally.

At present the Institute has eleven departments covering all the major engineering and science disciplines, offering B. Tech., B. Des., M. Tech., Ph.D. and M.Sc. programmes.

Gauhati University (Guwahati)
Gauhati University is the first University established in North East India. The University was established under the Gauhati University Act. 1947 (Assam Act, XVI of 1947) in the year 1948.

The University has six faculities on major disciplines. They are Faculty of Arts, Faculty of Science, Faculty of Commerce, Faculty of Law, Faculty of Engineering and Faculty of Medicine.

The Gauhati University has a campus at Kokrajhar also which was established in the year 1997 with four deparments i.e. Assamese, Boro, English and Economics. There are all total 194 affiliated colleges under Guahati University.
